Bruises

General Information

Muscle contusions, or bruises, are the second most common sports injuries behind strains. They are caused by direct blows to a muscle, like being hit by a ball or a tennis racquet.

Most muscle contusions are minor and don’t even require you to stop your activities. However, severe muscle contusions cause deep tissue damage and can take several months of rest to recover.

If you have a severe muscle contusion, the sports medicine specialists at Goshen Orthopedics can help. We are passionate about helping athletes of all ages in our community enjoy their favorite sports and activities.

Severe bruise treatment at Goshen Orthopedics

If you have a muscle contusion, you’ll notice symptoms like a lump or a knot at the injury site, along with pain, swelling, skin discoloration and limited range of motion.

Most bruises respond to rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) for 24 to 48 hours. Our providers may also recommend anti-inflammatory medicines.

You may need to see a physical therapist if you have a severe contusion. This will help rehabilitate the muscle. Goshen Rehabilitation is located in the same building as our Orthopedics & Sports Medicine practice. Our staff offers seamless care by scheduling appointments on the same day, saving you travel time.
