Interstitial Lung Disease

General Information

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is an umbrella term for lung diseases that cause scarring on lung tissue, such as pulmonary fibrosis. At Goshen Heart & Vascular Center, we understand how lung disease can make something as simple as breathing difficult and lower your quality of life.

Through our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program and leading-edge treatments, we can create a personalized plan that supports your complete well-being.

If you are concerned about your lung or heart health, talk to your primary care provider. Or, if you want to talk to someone at the Heart & Vascular Center, call (574) 533-7476 to make an appointment.

Recognizing ILD causes and symptoms

Long-term exposure to hazardous materials, such as coal dust or asbestos, or exposure to molds, gases or fumes, causes lung scarring. Some types of interstitial lung diseases are the result of autoimmune diseases.

Common interstitial lung disease symptoms include a dry cough and shortness of breath, even when resting. Talk to your primary care provider about a lung screening if you have these symptoms.

Individualized treatment for scarred lungs

While scarring is irreversible, Goshen Heart & Vascular Center offers several interstitial lung disease treatment options to improve your symptoms, prevent further scarring and improve your quality of life. Our fellowship trained experts may recommend:

  • Medication
  • Oxygen therapy
  • Lung transplant

You will also participate in our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, which provides lung education services, a customized exercise plan and lifestyle changes. You will work with an experienced team of exercise physiologists, registered nurses and respiratory therapists to determine how to care for your specific needs.
