Knee replacement surgery leads back to ballroom dancing – and so much more!

Reluctant to face knee surgery, Sandy suffered with debilitating knee pain for over five years. Finally in 2022, she had not one – but two knee replacements, one in April and one in July!
“I was so apprehensive about surgery, but my doctor was very reassuring,” Sandy said. “I trusted his plan to help me get back to enjoying life. Before my first surgery, I lost 25 pounds and did the home exercises to strengthen my knees. It wasn’t easy, but I’m so glad I did it.”
Not only did Sandy show her commitment to surgery by exercising and losing weight before her surgery, she worked consistently with her physical therapists at Goshen Rehabilitation during her recovery. She believes they were instrumental in her recovery, helping her learn to walk normally again after so many years of knee pain.
Back to the basics without pain
Everyday life is so much easier for Sandy, she is back to walking and shopping without pain. Stairs are no longer limitations in her life – she easily climbs the stairs at her bi-level house, the bleachers at basketball games and band concerts, and even the steep above-ground pool ladder in her backyard. Most recently, she navigated two airports with ease when visiting her daughters and grandchildren in the Dakotas.
A new focus on fitness – and dancing!
Sandy is no longer left out or left behind when it comes to keeping up with her active husband and grandchildren. In fact, she may be leading the way! She is dedicated to a newfound fitness regimen that includes water aerobics, walking, biking, rowing and weightlifting. In February 2023, she completed an Iron Man level fitness challenge at her local wellness center. Sandy also tracks her steps daily to ensure she meets or exceeds her 10K step goal. Lastly, she is back on the dance floor with her husband for weekly lessons on the foxtrot, rumba, salsa and more!
