Kyphoplasty
General Information
Kyphoplasty, or balloon kyphoplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure that treats spinal compression fractures, which occur in the bony vertebrae.
Often caused by osteoporosis, cancer or injury, spinal compression fractures are painful, limiting movement and function. A kyphoplasty procedure can relieve pain and restore function. Your provider may recommend kyphoplasty if your back pain is severe or lasts longer than two months and hasn’t improved with other treatments, such as physical therapy.
Our team at Goshen Physicians Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is committed to the well-being of our community. If you have severe pain from a spinal compression fracture, talk to your provider about your options for kyphoplasty. Whenever possible, we perform innovative minimally invasive surgeries instead of open surgery to reduce pain and shorten your recovery time.
What to expect from balloon kyphoplasty and recovery
While you're under anesthesia, your surgeon inserts a needle into the affected vertebra using imaging to track its position. The surgeon then threads a deflated balloon through the needle until it reaches the affected area. The balloon is inflated and creates a space, which is next filled with cement that connects the broken bone fragments.
You can usually go home after your kyphoplasty procedure. Expect to rest for a day, then gradually resume your normal activities. We recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for several weeks.
